Excerpt: Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf und Pottendorf, Imperial Count of Zinzendorf and Pottendorf, (May 26, 1700 May 9, 1760), German religious and social reformer and bishop of the Moravian Church, was born at Dresden. Zinzendorf had a naturally alert and active mind, and an enthusiastic temperament that made his life one of ceaseless planning and executing. Like Martin Luther, he was often influenced by strong and vehement feelings, and he was easily moved both by sorrow and joy. He was an eager seeker after truth, and could not understand men who at all costs kept to the opinions they had once formed; yet he had an exceptional talent for talking on religious subjects even with those who differed from him. Few men have been more solicitous for the happiness and comfort of others, even in little things. His activity and varied gifts sometimes landed him in oddities and contradictions that not infrequently looked like equivocation and dissimulation, and the courtly training of his youth made him susceptible about his authority even when no one disputed it. He was a natural orator, and though his dress was simple his personal appearance gave an impression of distinction and force. His projects were often misunderstood, and in 1736 he was even banished from Saxony, but in 1749 the government rescinded its decree and begged him to establish within its jurisdiction more settlements like that at Herrnhut. He is commemorated as a hymnwriter and a renewer of the church by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on their Calendar of Saints and on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA) on May 9. Excerpt: Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius , commonly called Boethius (ca. 480524 or 525) was a Christian philosopher of the early 6th century. He was born in Rome to an ancient and important family which included emperors Petronius Maximus and Olybrius and many consuls . His father, Flavius Manlius Boethius, was consul in 487 after Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor . Boethius, of the noble Anicius lineage, entered public life at a young age and was already a senator by the age of 25. Boethius himself was consul in 510 in the kingdom of the Ostrogoths . In 522 he saw his two sons become consuls. Boethius was executed by King Theodoric the Great , who suspected him of conspiring with the Byzantine Empire . It may be possible to link his work to the game of Rithmomachia .Early life Boethius’ exact birth date is unknown. It is generally established at around AD 481, the same year of birth as St. Benedict . Boethius was born to a patrician family which had been Christian for about a century. His father’s line included two popes, and both parents counted Roman emperors among their ancestors.Although Boethius is believed to have been born into a Christian family, some scholars have conjectured that he abandoned Christianity for paganism, perhaps on his deathbed. Momigliano argues “many people have turned to Christianity for consolation. Boethius turned to paganism. His Christianity collapsed it collapsed so thoroughly that perhaps he did not even notice its disappearance.” However, this has been a popular idea among scholars of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and does not reflect the majority of scholarship on the matter. It is unknown where Boethius received his formidable education in Greek. |

It is strange to pass from the most true to the most uncertain, but as we are here trying to tread as far as possible in the steps of our ancestors in our study of great examples ; and also since we have just seen the highest models of the Heroic which were held up to those who lived under Divine revelation; it is well to pass to the grandest portraits of character invented by the human mind when left to itself. It is scarcely true, however, to say that Hector was the highest ideal of the ancients themselves. Circumstances led to his being the favourite in the Middle Ages, partly because the classic heroes had become chiefly known through Latin writings which were favourable to Hector’s cause, and partly because there are elements in his nature, as originally depicted, which are more congenial to a Christian than are the dispositions of his enemies. In order to have any understanding of the persons we have to study, it is needful to know what were the objects of their chief admiration, and therefore, together with Hector, we will try to describe the other two chief Heroes who were admired in ancient times, namely, Achilles and Ulysses, the three together perhaps making the highest perfection that the Greeks could conceive. It is strange to pass from the most true to the most uncertain, but as we are here trying to tread as far as possible in the steps of our ancestors in our study of great examples ; and also since we have just seen the highest models of the Heroic which were held up to those who lived under Divine revelation; it is well to pass to the grandest portraits of character invented by the human mind when left to itself. It is scarcely true, however, to say that Hector was the highest ideal of the ancients themselves. Circumstances led to his being the favourite in the Middle Ages, partly because the classic heroes had become chiefly known through Latin writings which were favourable to Hector’s cause, and partly because there are elements in his nature, as originally depicted, which are more congenial to a Christian than are the dispositions of his enemies. In order to have any understanding of the persons we have to study, it is needful to know what were the objects of their chief admiration, and therefore, together with Hector, we will try to describe the other two chief Heroes who were admired in ancient times, namely, Achilles and Ulysses, the three together perhaps making the highest perfection that the Greeks could conceive. According to the old attempts at chronology, these personages shouldhave been placed before, instead of after, David, as they were supposed to be contemporary with Saul; but in very truth the whole of their adventures are so unhistorical, that it is a futile endeavour to assign to them any date.
