family history trees
A good Family History/tree site!?

I am looking for a site where you don’t actually need to create the Family Tree yourself!, this type of website is all i am coming across.
I f anyone has any ideas of a website where you find the tree rather than building one,i would be sooooo grateful as my dad is bugging me to find his mothers history and her family tree.

I’ll do it for money.
Your great aunt may have done it for love.
Look on

http://wc.rootsweb.Ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

and

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

for your great grandparents. If they are there chances are someone in your family “did” at least part of the tree.

If not, you’ll have to research it.

On the bright side, if he will spring for an Ancestry subscription, it is easier work than weeding, painting the fence or doing dishes.

As the millennium turns, the crazed trend to produce direct-to-video sequels swells. Very few of these sequels are inspired, although most do not harm their origins. The Trees of San Francisco

The Trees of San Francisco

“”Mike Sullivan loves his adopted city of San Francisco, and he loves trees. In The Trees of San Francisco he has combined his passions, offering a striking and handy compendium of botanical information, historical tidbits, cultivation hints, and more.>Sullivan’s introduction details the history of trees in the city, a fairly recent phenomenon. The text then piques the reader’s interest with discussions of 71 city trees. Each tree is illustrated with a photograph–with its common and scientific names prominently displayed–and its specific location within San Francisco, along with other sites; frequently a close-up shot of the tree is included. Sprinkled throughout are 13 sidelights relating to trees; among the topics are the city’s wild parrots and the trees they love; an overview of the objectives of the Friends of the Urban Forest; and discussions about the link between Australia’s trees and those in the city, such as the eucalyptus.>The second part of the book gets the reader up”

“A large portion of our population are in the golden years of their life and have lived through unprecedented changes during their life span that has never been recorded. They have an amazing history locked in their minds that most family members are unaware of. Every year families lose their parents before they have gleaned valuable histories of family trees, events, memories and historical values that can never be recovered. Most family members are unaware of the amazing history of these great saints. Here is a resource that captures a lifetime of detail that can be passed down for generations to come. > How we communicate life’s lessons to our children, may determine the course set for our descendants’ own lives. Little may remain to remind anyone of an ordinary life-a cold, hard tombstone, a few dog-eared photos, perhaps some possessions, unless written down. The thoughts and beliefs that once defined an individual, disappear with his or her last breath. > “To My Family: My Reflections, Values, Experiences and Family History” is a practical, user-friendly tool that will allow families to capture the rich legacy of their family members for the conveyance of wisdom, knowledge, family history, understanding and the experience of beloved family members before it is too late.”

“Warren and Howie have been friends since they were six years old, neighbors in the mid-Fifties Missouri cotton town of Carlisle. Sharing more than a back alley, they grow up together in the town’s common nurture. Their differences lie in their backgrounds. Warren is the son of the local Methodist clergy, Howie, the son of a successful owner of what in those days was referred to as a roadhouse. These two families share not only a physical proximity, but a friendship which includes not only their sons but fathers as well. Growing up means becoming more and more aware of their town and its culture, but also with the adult realities with which their fathers wrestle everyday. The reader will see that as much as Carlisle is unique it is also an example of a Delta culture which supports its people day by day, through good times and bad. Come along then on a journey to maturity of both Howie and Warren as well as their fathers in a land where cotton shimmers in the blazing Southern sun and a whole community shelters in its shade. Before the story is finished readers will learn a lot, not only about two growing boys, their town and their fathers but hopefully about themselves and their values. PHILIP NIBLACK is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Vanderbilt and Boston Universities. The child of a Methodist parsonage, he answered the call to the Pastorate at the age of 21. Blessed with a family heritage in the Ministry, he has served churches in small towns, suburbs and central cities. His hobbies include history and geography. He and his wife Adele make their home in suburban St. Louis.”

A Natural History of North American Trees

A Natural History of North American Trees

$16.6

Donald Culross Peattie’s two books about American trees were first published in the 1950s. In this beautiful new one-volume edition, modern readers are introduced to one of the best nature writers of the last century. More than one hundred of the original illustrations by Paul Landacre highlight the eloquent and entertaining accounts of American trees. As we read Peattie’s descriptions, we catch glimpses of our country’s history and past daily life that no textbook could ever illuminate so vividly. Here you’ll learn about everything from how a species was discovered to the part it played in our country’s history. Pioneers often stabled an animal in the hollow heart of an old sycamore, and the whole family might live there until they could build a log cabin. The tuliptree, the tallest native hardwood, is easier to work than most softwood trees; Daniel Boone carved a sixty-foot canoe from one tree to carry his family from Kentucky into Spanish territory. In the days before the Revolution, the British and the colonists waged an undeclared war over New England’s white pines, which made the best tall masts for fighting ships. It’s fascinating to learn about the commercial uses of various woods — for paper, fine furniture, fence posts, matchsticks, house framing, airplane wings, and dozens of other preplastic uses. But we cannot read this book without the occasional lump in our throats. The American elm was still alive when Peattie wrote, but as we read his account today we can see what caused its demise. Audubon’s portrait of a pair of loving passenger pigeons in an American beech is considered by many to be his greatest painting. It certainly touched the poet in Donald Culross Peattie as he depicted the extinction of the passenger pigeon when the beech forest was destroyed. A Natural History of North American Trees gives us a picture of life in America from its earliest days to the middle of the last century. The information is always interesting, though often heartbreaking. While Peattie looks for the better side of man’s nature, he reports sorrowfully on the greed and waste that have doomed so much of America’s virgin forest.

The Marriage in the Trees

The Marriage in the Trees

$15.94

Many of the poems in The Marriage in the Trees, Stanley Plumly’s sixth book of poetry, concern the passing of the author’s parents. This deeply personal collection demonstrates a mastery of form and language and a wisdom that marks the work of a mature poet, one of our finest. Images of trees and birds dominate these poems. Birds — owls, doves, crows, and cardinals — whether remembered from childhood or spotted in a rain shower at Union Square, frequently inspire Plumly’s lyrical meditations. They serve as symbols of the vitality at the abrupt edges of life. Trees — losing their leaves in the autumn, blooming in the spring, providing wood for both a home as well as a casket and cover from exposure — stand watch over these poems as they do over the life around us, symbols of permanence amid the transience of life. Memory, history, and family are powerful presences here, the past infusing the present with questions and meaning. The Marriage in the Trees advances Stanley Plumly’s standing as one of our strongest and most accomplished lyric poets.

“Using letters and other family documents, Frazier reconstructs two hundred years of middle-class life, visiting small towns his ancestors lived in, reading books they read, and discovering the larger forces of history that affected them. He observes some of them during the British raid on Danbury, Connecticut, in the Revolutionary War; he follows others west as they pioneer in the wilderness of Ohio and Indiana; he visits the battlefields where they fought the Civil War. Frazier interviews old-timers, uncles, aunts, cousins, maids, and a beer-store owner who knew his dad. He pursues the family saga in aspect from trivial to grand, hoping for “a meaning that would defeat death.” “Family “is a poetic epic of facts, a chronicle of Protestant culture’s rise and fall, a memorial, and a revised view of American history as romantic as it is cold-eyed.>”

“They were cutting the branches off the trees again. When Zari first arrived in East London, she had wondered about the trees. She had never seen any fields and farms in London, like there were at home in Kosovo. But there were more trees. Or at least you noticed them here. In Kosovo, there were entire forests, but no one thought about them because they were, well, just there. In London, the trees look uncomfortable growing out of the pavement as if they were refugees in a foreign country, too. Zaris story takes you from the fighting in Kosovo to the concrete streets of the city of London but there is conflict here too. You cant leave problems behind just because you leave your country as a refugee in the back of a lorry full of cheese Making friends is a minefield in itself and the secrets she discovers in the family just add to the trouble. War, peace, faith and nationality everything is changing in Zaris life. Its not just the trees that are feeling uncomfortable.”

Under Olive Trees: The Odyssey of a Palestinian-American Family

Under Olive Trees: The Odyssey of a Palestinian-American Family

$25.01

When Israel attacked Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, and Syria on June 5, 1967, husband and wife, Sally Bahous and Delmas Allen, knew that to ensure their safety they must soon leave Beirut, Lebanon, which had been their home for the last four years. With their three young children-Carrie, Jimbo, and Sudie-they boarded the USS Exilona bound for the United States. At that time more than forty years ago, author Sally Bahous didn’t realize she would never return to Beirut. Based on letters Sally and Delmas wrote to their parents during the four years they lived in Beirut, this memoir vividly conveys the richness of Palestinian family life, history, and culture before and after Israel took possession of Palestinian lands, the political forces that originated and sustained Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, and the injustice to the people that followed. Through a detailed portrayal of the daily lives of Sally’s family in the Palestinian community already in exile in Beirut, Under Olive Trees describes the events and attitudes that led to that exile. Interwoven throughout are easy to- follow memories of life in Palestine before the exile to Beirut. Bahous paints a beautiful portrait of a life enriched by family and friends.

Climbing The Mango Trees

Climbing The Mango Trees

$15.74

Today’s most highly regarded writer on Indian food gives us an enchanting memoir of her childhood in Delhi in an age and a society that has since disappeared. Madhur (meaning “sweet as honey”) Jaffrey grew up in a large family compound where her grandfather often presided over dinners at which forty or more members of his extended family would savor together the wonderfully flavorful dishes that were forever imprinted on Madhur’s palate. Climbing mango trees in the orchard, armed with a mixture of salt, pepper, ground chilies, and roasted cumin; picnicking in the Himalayan foothills on meatballs stuffed with raisins and mint and tucked into freshly baked pooris; sampling the heady flavors in the lunch boxes of Muslim friends; sneaking tastes of exotic street fare—these are the food memories Madhur Jaffrey draws on as a way of telling her story. Independent, sensitive, and ever curious, as a young girl she loved uncovering her family’s many-layered history, and she was deeply affected by their personal trials and by the devastating consequences of Partition, which ripped their world apart. Climbing the Mango Trees is both an enormously appealing account of an unusual childhood and a testament to the power of food to evoke memory. And, at the end, this treasure of a book contains a secret ingredient–more than thirty family recipes recovered from Madhur’s childhood, which she now shares with us.

A Christian’s Treasury of Trees & Plants

$47.95

“Whether you believe in them or not, the legends surrounding tress and plants contain powerful images which appeal to us because of their humanity and sheer simplicity. >God employed a burning bush as a medium of revelation when He spoke to Moses, and every tree or plant on this planet is afire with His presence. for example, in the plant realm, the cornflower has ultraviolet pigments in its blue petals, which are invisible to the human eye, but irresistible to a pollinating bee. In the realm of trees, the seed of the maple is equipped with a neat pair of wings, which enables it to sail away from the parent on a current of air. >Jesus used trees and plants as metaphors, and early monks and missionaries took up the torch, relabeling a number of trees and plants with holy names as an educational tool. >In this book, I have sought to rescue some of these legends from obscurity, concentrating on those within the Judeo-Christian tradition: in a few instances I have taken the liberty of linking biblical references to botanical names. >It is my hope that this collection, with its beautiful photographs and simple text, will reach a wide readership, to inform, inspire, and entertain.”

2 Worlds, The Real Venezuela: Living on the Edge of the Jungle and the Rise of Hugo Chavez

$4.95

The ancient underlying geology of Venezuela ranges up to at least 3.4 billion years old. It controls the soils and vegetation above it, and thus predicates the immense natural biological and mineral resources of the country. This incredible natural wealth includes, besides the well-known oil resources around Lake Maracaibo, heavy crude reserves in the eastern plains that could power the industrialized world for centuries, a forest with at least 2,500 species of trees, as well as vast iron, bauxite, gold, and diamond resources. This natural wealth has powerfully influenced the history and politics of modern Venezuela. Hugo Chavez is a predictable outgrowth of all that this natural wealth led to.Jeff led a multi-year US Geological Survey science mission to map the nearly roadless, jungle-covered southern half of Venezuela – an area bigger than Texas – an effort that included a sophisticated mineral resource assessment. This assessment shows that Venezuela is blessed beyond measure, with far more than its immense but already failing sweet crude reserves. Interestingly, our five-year USGS mission was 100% paid for by the Venezuelan government, and we moved to Venezuela and lived in-country as a family. Louise taught elementary and high school, fed hungry missionaries, and raised five children as Venezuelans. We had Diplomatic passports, but they offered scant protection against the bandits, both official and unofficial. Crocodiles, piranha, Bushmasters, Army Ants, Killer Bees, Bubonic Plague, and malaria (among other direct hazards) also don’t care about your passport. We deliberately chose to live as Venezuelans, and were thus folded into the culture through a vibrant local Mormon Church as brothers and sisters. They taught us much – and they protected us as if we were family. As interested bystanders we thus witnessed an amazing transition: we watched political corruption get so far out of control that it gutted the

A Natural History of North American Trees

A Natural History of North American Trees

$40

It’s fascinating to learn about the commercial uses of various woods—for paper, fine furniture, fence posts, matchsticks, house framing, airplane wings, and dozens of other preplastic uses. But we cannot read this book without the occasional lump in our throats. The American elm was still alive when Peattie wrote, but as we read his account today we can see what caused its demise. Audubon’s portrait of a pair of loving passenger pigeons in an American beech is considered by many to be his greatest painting. It certainly touched the poet in Donald Culross Peattie as he depicted the extinction of the passenger pigeon when the beech forest was destroyed.A Natural History of North American Trees gives us a picture of life in America from its earliest days to the middle of the last century. The information is always interesting,

A Southern Belle Primer: Or Why Paris Hilton Will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma

A Southern Belle Primer: Or Why Paris Hilton Will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma

$11.95

Who knows what lurks in the hearts of the women of Dixie? A Southern Belle Primer tells us all. In this rollicking guide to survival in a society that has not gone with the wind, the mystique of the Southern belle is exposed. Maryln Schwartz’s cult classic and perennial bestseller returns with a new look to steer the next generation of belles through the enduring world of Southern propriety and protocol.Being a belle is not a part-time job—it’s a cradle-to-grave commitment—and A Southern Belle Primer covers it all. With anecdotes, observations, lists, and delightful illustrations, the Primer delves into family trees, big hair, the Twelve Patterns of the Silver Zodiac (everyone knows girls who choose certain silver patterns are fast), the fashion calendar (the do-or-die seasonal etiquette of patent leather, gloves, and stockings), honorary belles, wannabe belles, fallen belles, and even why Paris Hilton will never be a Kappa Kappa Gamma. The Primer also reveals shocking real-life stories from contemporary Southern belle history: the truth behind the Garden Club wars in Natchez, Mississippi, the Chattanooga woman shunned by society for a faux pas in her chicken salad recipe, and the disastrous white-shoe-in-September affair during the Texas visit of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. What The Official Preppy Handbook did for the madras-and-penny-loafer set A Southern Belle Primer does for the indestructible ladies from below the Mason–Dixon Line, in an uproarious guide to navigating a society that continues to fascinate people the world over.

Alkaloids: Chemical and Biological Perspectives, Volume 11

Alkaloids: Chemical and Biological Perspectives, Volume 11

$236.41

Volume 11 of this series presents five timely reviews on current research on alkaloids. Chapter 1 by Paul L. Schiff, Jr. is a monumental survey of research that has been carried out over the past decade on the Thalictrum alkaloids. Forty-six new alkaloids are described from fifteen species of the genus Thalictrum, as well as 116 alkaloids of known structure from thirty-six species and subspecies of the genus. The chapter includes discussions of isolation and structure elucidation, analysis, biosynthesis, cell culture, and pharmacology. Also featured are inclusive compilations of botanical sources, alkaloids by alkaloid types, and calculated molecular weights of the Thalictrum alkaloids.Chapter 2 by Giovanni Appendino provides a fascinating treatment of Taxine, a collective name referring to a mixture of diterpenoid alkaloids from the yew tree (genus: Taxus). Taxine is responsible for the toxic properties of the yew tree that has been documented in historical and fictional literature, from Julius Caesar to Shakespeare, and from Agatha Christie to T.S. Eliot. The chapter treats the history, isolation techniques, structure elucidation, chemistry, and pharmacology of Taxine.Chapter 3 by Mary D. Menachery surveys the alkaloids of South American Menispermaceae (moonseed family). Many different structural types are included in this family. The alkaloid-bearing plants are woody-vines, shrubs, or small trees. Several of these species possess potent curare activity. The chemistry as well as pharmacology of these alkaloids is summarized.Chapter 4 by Russell J. Molyneux, Robert J. Nash, and Naoki Asano treats the chemistry and biological activity of the calystegines and relatednortropane alkaloids. These polyhydroxylated bicyclic alkaloids represent another class of compounds that inhibit glycosidases, producing profound effects in biological systems by disrupting the essential cellular function of glycoprotein processing.Chapter 5, a related chapter
