LeAnn Rimes planned to succeed This Woman, her 2005 return to country, with a pop album called Whatever We Wanna in 2006, but as This Woman continued to sell steadily in the U.S., that album wound up seeing the light of day only in Europe. Instead of issuing Whatever We Wanna in America in 2007, Rimes released an entirely different, brand-new album called Family, a record that was closer to country than her 2006 Europop excursion. Of course, this makes it tailor-made for the American market, where she is still seen primarily as a country singer, not a pop star, but Family isn’t quite a crass commercial move. Instead, it’s her first album of all original material (many co-written with Dean Sheremet, Blair Daly, and Darrell Brown in some combination or another), which makes this a bit of a relative risk, as Rimes has been known as song interpreter, not a songwriter, in the decade she’s been recording. Then again, Rimes hasn’t exactly been complacent during those ten years: she’s recorded everything from classic country to dance-pop, dabbling in adult contemporary crossovers, inspirational music, and even rockabilly along the way. She’s learned a lot in those explorations, as evidenced by Family, which may not touch on everything she’s done but is surprisingly far-ranging underneath its soft country-pop veneer. There may be just a bit too much of the smooth crossover material here, particularly on the first half of the record, but beneath that gloss there are some sturdy songs, songs that play like a blend of Reba McEntire and early Dixie Chicks. Also, as the album rolls on, Rimes loosens up, first with the sunny party tune “Good Friend and a Glass of Wine,” then eventually rolling to the swaggering Marc Broussard duet “Nothin’ Wrong,” which kicks up some genuine dirt, and then culminating in the slow, soulful crawl of “One Day Too Long.” On songs like these, Rimes illustrates her range as a singer along with some true strength as a writer, and they help make Family a canny blend of the commercial and the confessional — an album that feels heartfelt, yet is as accessible and enjoyable as her best records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Carole Rabinowitz-Neuen – Cello; JayDee Mannes – Pedal Steel; Joanna Janet – Vocals (Background); John Catchings – Cello; Jonathan Yudkin – Mandola, Fiddle, Banjo; Kris Wilkinson – Viola; LeAnn Rimes – Vocals (Background);

Life in the Family: An Oral History of the Children of God

“From a unique insider’s perspective — including interviews with more than seven-hundred family members — James D. Chancellor charts The Family’s course since its emergence as the most controversial group to grow out of the Jesus People Movement in the 1960s.>Chancellor, who had extraordinary access to rare Family records, includes the experiences of members who have remained loyal to the community and to the founding vision of their prophet, David Brandt Berg. In the first book of its kind — comprising often painful personal histories and firsthand accounts — Chancellor focuses on the motivation and process of becoming a Child of God, the core beliefs of the community, the mission of the disciples, their shifting sexual mores, and the cost of membership in terms of internal discipline and external persecution.>Intense confrontation with the legal, religious, political, and educational establishment marked the movement’s activities from the beginning. The young disciples heeded the call of their prophet to flee a soon-to-be-destroyed North America. Dispersed throughout Europe, Latin America, Africa, and East Asia, they virtually disappeared from the American landscape. In the late 1980s, The Family had gone through extreme theological and lifestyle changes, including a radical reordering of their sexual ethos. The Children of God started to come home. Now a worldwide counterculture of some twelve thousand members, the movement’s colorful history reveals a profoundly religious group that has tested the limits of human experience.”

True Believers: The Musical Family of Rounder Records

True Believers: The Musical Family of Rounder Records

$11.39

In 1970, three folk music fans decided to start a record company to document the old-time and bluegrass music that they loved so much. More than 30 years later, Rounder Records has become America’s biggest and most respected roots music label, releasing stand-out recordings of exceptional artists in many different genres: bluegrass, traditional and contemporary folk, blues, Cajun and zydeco, reggae, classic R&B, ethnic, and international music from around the world, and even a handful of rock artists. Rounder even managed to turn a profit doing all this, and even struck gold and platinum with a few of their artists (most notably George Thorogood and Alison Krauss). True Believers: The Musical Family of Rounder Records is a documentary that looks at the inside story behind one of the most surprising success stories in the music business, and also offers performance footage of several of Rounder’s artists. Performers include Alison Krauss, Marcia Ball, Bill Morrissey, Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers, Irma Thomas, and Tish Hinojosa. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

‘A pure fellowship’: The danger and necessity of purity in white and African-American Mennonite racial exchange, 1935–1971.

$49.99

“How did the Civil Rights Movement bring about change?” In answer to that question, this dissertation argues that the splintering of purity rhetoric within the intimate environments of home and sanctuary both inhibited and empowered white and African-American religious practitioners to seek social change. To make this argument, this project follows the purity-focused activity of white and African-American Mennonites through the long civil rights era. Building on the work of anthropologist Mary Douglas, this dissertation focus on Mennonites’ multiple expressions of purity—defined here as a cultural value that orders society by defining group boundaries—through racially focused clothing restrictions, marriage practices, interracial congregations, evangelism initiatives, and service programs. Based on oral histories, photographs, diaries, and denominational records, this work demonstrates how purity values changed over time. The record of this change reveals how religious actors shifted their attention from maintaining racially untainted blood in the 1930s, to bolstering homogeneous fellowships in the 1940s, to protecting female chastity in the 1950s, and then to managing a splintered religious rhetoric in the 1960s. That rhetoric reveals a set of theologically expressed purity forms—in religious, sexual, racial, and ethical manifestations—alongside a rule-based purity heuristic focused on establishing protective group boundaries. This study thus reveals a striking continuity: the danger and necessity of purity remained interlocked for four decades. Each time an expression of purity attracted African Americans to the church, another purity expression blocked their entrance.;The argument advanced by this dissertation thus repositions the existing historiography of the Civil Rights Movement by shifting attention away from the public drama of street marches and civil arrests and toward the quotidian negotiation of family meals and evening devotions. Because their
