Genology
Why did my ancestrys change there name from handelman to andelman when they came to america? GENOLOGY?
I don’t really get why, so can anyone think of a logical reasn why they did that?
I can understand they went from handelman to smith, but gee! Andelman just the same as handelman!
Contrary to popular belief, “Ellis Island” didn’t change as many names as suggested, since they recorded names off documents that the immigrant possessed and had with them.
This is ONLY a guess, but your Handleman Ancestor probably came from Great Britain, and the chance of an accent, I believe, is great. Many accents from G.B. would “DROP” the “H” sound. When your ancestor gave his name to a census taker, or other authority, he probably pronounced it “Andlemen”, without the “H” sound. I found this with a lot of my wife’s French Ancestors…When pronounced to English speaking people, Hamlin sounded more like “Amlaw”, Asslin sounded more like “Ashline”, and Beaudoin became “Boadway”, and Boileau became “Bilow”.
It is POSSIBLE that your family’s name spelling changed at Ellis Island, but the chances are better that they started after. There were many “victims of phonetics”
There was a joke about this in one of My Genealogy Classes. A gentleman from Poland was in line in Ellis Island and told the clerk that his name was Thomas Palowski. The name was recorded and the clerk took the next person in line who happened to be Asian. The Asian gentlemen was asked his name and he replied “Siam Ching”, so the clerk wrote down “Thomas Palowski”………..
