Tricks of the Trade: How to Think about Your Research While You’re Doing It $14 “Drawing on more than four decades of experience as a researcher and teacher, Howard Becker now brings to students and researchers the many valuable techniques he has learned. “Tricks of the Trade” will help students learn how to think about research projects. Assisted by Becker’s sage advice, students can make better sense of their research and simultaneously generate fresh ideas on where to look next for new data. The tricks cover four broad areas of social science: the creation of the “imagery” to guide research; methods of “sampling” to generate maximum variety in the data; the development of “concepts” to organize findings; and the use of “logical” methods to explore systematically the implications of what is found. Becker’s advice ranges from simple tricks such as changing an interview question from “Why?” to “How?” (as a way of getting people to talk without asking for a justification) to more technical tricks such as how to manipulate truth tables. >Becker has extracted these tricks from a variety of fields such as art history, anthropology, sociology, literature, and philosophy; and his dazzling variety of references ranges from James Agee to Ludwig Wittgenstein. Becker finds the common principles that lie behind good social science work, principles that apply to both quantitative and qualitative research. He offers practical advice, ideas students can apply to their data with the confidence that they will return with something they hadn’t thought of before. >Like “Writing for Social Scientists, Tricks of the Trade” will bring aid and comfort to generations of students. Written in the informal, accessible style for which Becker is known, this book will be an essentialresource for students in a wide variety of fields. >”An instant classic. . . . Becker’s stories and reflections make a great book, one that will find its way into the hands of a great many social scientists, and as with everything he writes, it is lively and accessible, a joy to read.”–Charles Ragin, Northwestern University” |

Sense of History $24.95 “As Americans enter the new century, their interest in the past has never been greater. In record numbers they visit museums and historic sites, attend commemorative ceremonies and festivals, watch historically based films, and reconstruct family genealogies. The question is, Why? What are Americans looking for when they engage with the past? And how is it different from what scholars call “history”?>In this book, David Glassberg surveys the shifting boundaries between the personal, public, and professional uses of the past and explores their place in the broader cultural landscape. Each chapter investigates a specific encounter between Americans and their history: the building of a pacifist war memorial in a rural Massachusetts town; the politics behind the creation of a new historical festival in San Francisco; the letters Ken Burns received in response to his film series on the Civil War; the differing perceptions among black and white residents as to what makes an urban neighborhood historic; and the efforts to identify certain places in California as worthy of commemoration. Along the way, Glassberg reflects not only on how Americans understand and use the past, but on the role of professional historians in that enterprise.>Combining the latest research on American memory with insights gained from Glassberg’s more than twenty years of personal experience in a variety of public history projects, Sense of History offers stimulating reading for all who care about the future of history in America.” |

Stepfamilies: History, Research, and Policy $5.59 Stepfamilies: History, Research, and Policy examines language use, laws, cultural stereotypes, media images, and social policies and practices to create an understanding of how predominant views about stepfamilies and stepfamily members are constructed within society. As the rates of divorce and remarriage continue to increase, it is more important than ever to overcome nuclear family ideology and abandon the model of research that compares stepfamilies with nonstepfamilies. This book shows you how honor and empowerment can be attained in new family structures and how alternative kin networks can be just as healthy as the traditional nuclear family unit.As this book examines the ability of different societies to integrate different family forms into mainstream notions of "family," you will realize the damaging effects of treating stepfamilies as incomplete, undesirable institutions. In fact, Stepfamilies: History, Research, and Policy will challenge your notions of family over and over again, as it discusses: key relationships in stepfamilies stepfather involvement in parenting after remarriage meaning of gender in a stepfamily differences in "investment" between biological and nonbiological parents demographic change and significant shifts in the social and cultural implications of stepfamilies attempting to reconstruct a household like that of a previous marriage the impact of stereotypes on the internal dynamics of stepfamilies and on the interactions of stepfamilies with outsiders the absence of guidelines and cultural norms for role performance and problem solving in stepfamiliesStepfamilies: History, Research, and Policy discusses both the difficulties of forming new families and households as well as the factors that promote family cohesiveness and integration in stepfamilies. From stereotypes of stepmothers to ambiguous legal relationships to child maltreatment in stepfamilies to sibling relations, there isn’t much that the penetrating lens of this book leaves uncovered. |

Behind the Text: History and Biblical Interpretation $39.99 “Christianity believes in a God who acts in history. The Bible tells us the story of God’s actions in Israel, culminating in the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth and the spreading of the gospel from Jerusalem to Rome. The issue of history is thus unavoidable when it comes to reading the BibleVolume 4 of the Scripture and Hermeneutics Series looks at how history has dominated biblical studies under the guise of historical criticism. This book explores ways in which different views of history influence interpretation. It considers the implications of a theology of history for biblical exegesis, and in several case studies it relates these insights to particular texts.”Few topics are more central to the task of biblical interpretation than history, and few books open up the subject in so illuminating and thought-provoking a manner as this splendid collection of essays and responses.”Hugh Williamson, Regius Professor of Hebrew, University of Oxford, England.” . . breaks new ground in its interdisciplinary examination of the methodology, presuppositions, practices and purposes of biblical hermeneutics, with a special emphasis on the relation of faith and history.”Eleonore Stump, Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy, Saint Louis University, United States”This volume holds great promise for the full-fledged academic recovery of the Bible as Scripture. It embodies an unusual combination of world-class scholarship, historic Christian orthodoxy, bold challenges to conventional wisdom, and the launching of fresh new ideas.”Al Wolters, Professor of Religion and Theology, Redeemer University College, Ontario, Canada”The essays presented here respect the need and fruitfulness of a criticalhistoriography while beginning the much-needed process of correcting the philosophical tenets underlying much modern and postmodern biblical research. The result is a book that mediates a faith understanding, both theoretical and practical, of how to read the Bible authentically as a Christian today.”Francis Martin, Chair, Catholic-Jewish Theological Studies, John Paul II Cultural Center, Washington, D.C.Not only is history central to the biblical story, but from a Christian perspective history revolves around Jesus Christ. All roads of human activity before Christ lead up to him, and all roads after Christ connect with him. A concern with history and God’s action in it is a central characteristic of the Bible. The Bible furnishes us with an account of God’s interactions with people and with the nation of Israel that stretches down the timeline from creation to the early church. It tells us of real men, women, and children, real circumstances and events, real cultures, places, languages, and worldviews. And it shows us God at work in human affairs, revealing his character and heart through his activities.”Behind” the Text examines the correlation between history and the Bible. How Satan Turned America Against God $39.95 “How Satan Turned America Against God is the sequel to my last book What Hath God Wrought : A Biblical Interpretation of American History (i.e., What God Wrought – Satan Sought). The book could be subtitled a “Biblical interpation of conspiracy history.” I have entire chapters that deal with Freemasonry, The Illuminati, Skull & Bones, and The Group (founded by Cecil Rhodes at Oxford University). I also have a chapter entitled “The Battle for Washington, D.C.” that gives the historical facts for both the Christian and arcane foundations of our capital. (This is the very subject matter that will form the basis of Dan Brown’s new novel entitled “The Solomon Key.”) There are also entire chapters on the shootdown of KAL Flight 007, the Oklahoma City bombing, the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the present war in Iraq. (The 9/11 chapter alone is 100 pages long, with 251 endnotes.) The theme of my book is that America’s past and present status revolves around our treatment of the Jew and the State of Israel. A combined excerpt from the inside flap and back dust jacket reads as follows: “The thesis of this volume is simple – America was created by God for a particular mission and will ultimately be destroyed for abandoning the same. Though unbeknownst to the average citizen, the main purpose for our existence has been to afford persecuted Jewry with a temporary haven of rest, and then to later aid and defend the State of Israel. (It is no coincidence that the letters USA form the center of the name Jerusalem.) America’s unique blessings have always been determined according to the divine formula given in Genesis 12:3.” “How Satan Turned America Against God deals with negative realityas opposed to positive fantasy. Contained within its pages are the results of six years’ research, encompassing dozens of high-profile interviews, numerous trips abroad and a bibliography containing 194 entries….This book reveals America’s main purpose for her existence, the tragic repudiation of that role and how Satan orchestrated the process. It will afford the reader with an ‘understanding of the times…for such a time as this’ (I Chronicles 12:32; Ester 4:14).” Finally, the three-page Afterword was written by Mr. Sam Cohen, “Father of the Neutron Bomb.”" |

Islam, Christianity, and the West: A Troubled History $25 “Beginning with Muhammad and his historical and cultural context, this book recounts the tale of the thirteen-century-long encounter of Western and Islamic civilizations. Armour uses the best of contemporary research to show how events such as the Crusades and the Reconquista of Spain have indelibly shaped the mindset of the West toward Islam and vice versa. He reveals how the modern Western political and economic system — marked by the globalization of capitalism, technology, and science — has been perceived by the Islamic world as a Godless secular assault on all that is holy. He ends with the Arab-Israeli conflict and the events of 11 September 2001 as the latest concrete manifestations of the tragic encounter between the three “People of the Book.”" |

Then Comes Marriage?: A Cultural History of the American Family $14.99 “>In 1949 film star Ingrid Bergman fled to Europe following a public outcry and her denunciation by the U.S. Senate. The charge? She had an adulterous affair with director Roberto Rossellini resulting in a pregnancy, actions for which one senator called her “a horrible example of womanhood and a powerful influence for evil.” Would any star flee the country over so minor an offense today? >Author Rebecca Price Janney examines how people in other eras throughout American history conducted their relationships. How did they fall short of God’s ideal as presented in the Scriptures? How often did they get it right? What has led us to becoming a culture of “anything goes” morality? And, conversely, have there been any surprising improvements in recent years? >This book is not a culture-wars creed, but rather a historical look at the American family, showing that the pattern is more complicated than a downward spiral of morality from our country’s founding to the present. In addition, one of the intriguing features of the book is the author’s close look at marriage and relationships within subcultures that are not often considered, including those of Native Americans, Conquistadors, and slaves. >In order to better understand the state of marriage and relationships in the U.S. today, Christians need to better understand not just Scripture but our nation’s history — and “Then Comes Marriage?” gives readers an accessible, broad, and thought-provoking introduction to both.” |

How to Read the Bible: A Guide to Scripture, Then and Now $21 “Scholars from different fields have joined forces to reexamine every aspect of the Hebrew Bible. Their research, carried out in universities and seminaries in Europe and America, has revolutionized our understanding of almost every chapter and verse. But have they killed the Bible in the process? >In “How to Read the Bible, ” Harvard professor James Kugel leads the reader chapter by chapter through the “quiet revolution” of recent biblical scholarship, showing time and again how radically the interpretations of today’s researchers differ from what people have always thought. The story of Adam and Eve, it turns out, was not originally about the “Fall of Man,” but about the move from a primitive, hunter-gatherer society to a settled, agricultural one. As for the stories of Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah, and Jacob and Esau, these narratives were not, at their origin, about individual people at all but, rather, explanations of some feature of Israelite society as it existed centuries after these figures were said to have lived. Dinah was never raped — her story was created by an editor to solve a certain problem in Genesis. In the earliest version of the Exodus story, Moses probably did not divide the Red Sea in half; instead, the Egyptians perished in a storm at sea. Whatever the original Ten Commandments might have been, scholars are quite sure they were different from the ones we have today. What’s more, the people long supposed to have written various books of the Bible were not, in the current consensus, their real authors: David did not write the Psalms, Solomon did not write Proverbs or Ecclesiastes; indeed, there is scarcely a book in the Bible that is not the product of different, anonymous authors and editors working in different periods.>Such findings pose a serious problem for adherents of traditional, Bible-based faiths. Hiding from the discoveries of modern scholars seems dishonest, but accepting them means undermining much of the Bible’s reliability and authority as the word of God. What to do? In his search for a solution, Kugel leads the reader back to a group of ancient biblical interpreters who flourished at the end of the biblical period. Far from naive, these interpreters consciously set out to depart from the original meaning of the Bible’s various stories, laws, and prophecies — and they, Kugel argues, hold the key to solving the dilemma of reading the Bible today. >”How to Read the Bible is, ” quite simply, the best, most original book about the Bible in decades. It offers an unflinching, insider’s look at the work of today’s scholars, together with a sustained consideration of what the Bible was for most of its history — before the rise of modern scholarship. Readable, clear, often funny but deeply serious in its purpose, this is a book for Christians and Jews, believers and secularists alike. It offers nothing less than a whole new way of thinking about sacred Scripture.” |

”Passion Killings:” A media and cultural perspective of intimate femicide in Botswana. $49.99 This study explores intimate femicide in Botswana, Africa, which is a country with a long peaceful history. This qualitative research explored a total of 114 media reports on intimate femicide (IF) in Botswana, which is widely known in the country as “Passion Killings.” There were 74 stories of IF and 40 stories of the public opinion on IF. The study used thematic analysis. Two newspapers, “Mmegi” and “The Voice,” were used as sources of data. The study was guided by feminist theory, empowerment theory and modernization theory. The analysis revealed the following themes: Media romanticizing IF, blaming the victim, excusing the perpetrator, awareness of couple violence by the family, triggering event, brutal murder, and danger posed to others. Views of the public regarding what contributes to IF included patriarchal social structure, modernization, empowerment of women, healthy relationships and media coverage that contributes to copycat homicide-suicide. In addressing IF in Botswana, the public suggested that there should be provision of education, revisitation of traditional conflict resolution strategies that were effective and use of professional counselling services.;The results of this study contribute to social work education in the following ways: International modernization could be taught to indicate how modernization of patriarchal societies can result in societal crisis as evidenced by passion killings in Botswana. Through social work education, societies going through modernization can be assisted to approach this process with less societal crisis and stress. While empowerment of women may lessen abusive situations for women, designing programs through social work education that empower both men and women may yield better results than programs that target women only. Mental health and counselling services for individuals going through relationship crisis are lacking in Botswana, and should be emphasised through social work education as being critical. |

100 Simple Secrets of Happy Families: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It $0.01 The Simple Science of a Happy FamilyFrom raising children to getting along with in-laws, what do people with close and loving families do differently than those with strained or unfulfilling relationships? Sociologists, therapists, and psychiatrists have spent entire careers investigating the ins and outs of family dynamics, yet their findings are inaccessible to ordinary people, hidden in obscure journals to be shared with other experts. Now, David Niven, the international bestselling author of The 100 Simple Secret series has collected the most current and significant data from more than a thousand of the best scientific studies on families and then spelled out the findings in plain English. The advice is based not on one person’s unique experiences or opinions, but offers for the first time the research of noted scientists studying average American families. These findings have been boiled down to one hundred essential ways to find and maintain love, joy, and satisfaction in all family relationships. Each statistic is accompanied by a true story about a real family showing the results in action.Don’t Forget the Past: Parents who share stories of family history with their children create higher levels of concern for family members and increase the likelihood of their children’s happiness. No Price Tag: Once basic necessities are met, the increasing economic status of one’s family has zero effect on the likelihood of feeling satisfied with life.Let Every Opinion Be Heard: Senior citizens having trouble living in their own homes are 84 percent more likely to be satisfied with their housing situation if they feel as if their concerns are an important part of selecting a new home or facility. The Greatest Gift: Life satisfaction is 72 percent more likely among those who feel content with their family life. |

A Dictionary of Popes $19.95 This fascinating dictionary gives concise accounts of every officially recognized pope in history, from St Peter to Pope Benedict XVI, as well as all of their irregularly elected rivals, the so-called antipopes. Each pope and antipope’s entry covers his family and social background and pre-papal career as well as his activities in office. Also, an appendix provides a detailed discussion and analysis of many topics including the theory that there has been a female pope. This new edition reflects the very latest in papal research and contains additional information in the further reading sections of each entry, making the book an even more useful starting place for research into specific pontiffs. Moreover, the entries are arranged chronologically, creating a continuous history of the papacy over almost 2,000 years. It reveals how, for much of that history, spiritual and temporal power has been inextricably mingled in the person of the pope. A fascinating read for students of theology and history, as well as the general reader with an interest in Christian history. |
