Why Do We Hope?: Images in the Psalms

Why Do We Hope?: Images in the Psalms

$14.95

“In this follow-up to his popular book What Are We Hoping For? New Testament Images, Daniel J. Harrington extends his reflections on hope in the Scriptures. He draws us into the striking images of the psalms–the mountain, the sun, refuge, the kingdom, sheltering wings, the olive tree, and the shepherd–to lead us to the discovery that hope is the predominant image of the book of Psalms. Even in their darkest laments, the psalmists remind us that God hears us and will never abandon us. In these brief essays, Harrington opens up the language of forty psalms, explores their literary and historical context, and then ties the psalm to our reading as Christians whose ultimate hope is in Jesus Christ. As we read and reflect on the psalms with Harrington’s guidance, we call to mind the ways we experience God and our hopes, both daily and for all time. Drawn into the world of the psalmist and discovering how our experiences often mirror theirs, we too will express our hope in God’s love and mercy and in the coming of God’s kingdom.”

What Rough Beast?: Images of God in the Hebrew Bible

What Rough Beast?: Images of God in the Hebrew Bible

$30

“A number of texts in the Hebrew Bible consistently command attention and yet defy easy explanation: Why did God try to kill Moses? Why did God kill the man who touched the ark to keep it from falling? Why did God put a tree in the middle of the Garden? David Penchansky tackles these tough questions and in so doing opens up for readers a new understanding of how the Hebrew Bible portrays God.>Penchansky examines six biblical narrative that depict God negatively, outlining their social, political, and theological ramifications. He believes the stories provide an important key to the Israelites’ understanding of their God. He also believes the stories provide a structure for understanding experiences of evil and suffering within our own century, and for accepting the ambiguity that permeates all human existence.”

“Anthony Pinn’s engrossing survey highlights the rich diversity of black religious life in America, revealing manifestations of an ever-changing black religious quest in four non-Christian indigenous movements.>Based on extensive interviews, travel, and research — embellished with ample photos, bibliographies, and case studies — Pinn provides an insider look at Voodoo, Orisha devotion, Santeria, the Nation of Islam, and Black Humanism in the U.S. Focusing less on institutional and doctrinal history and more on the varied popular religious practices and sites, his volume highlights the influence of Caribbean religions in the U.S., practices of divination and healing, the surge of black Muslim religion, the emergence of black humanism, religious influences on the ethical practices of black women, and the import of previously overlooked religious settings (e.g., church women’s clubs, local politics, Pentecostal religion, private religious practices).>The emergent picture, more subtle, varied, and vibrant than traditional black Christian marks a new era in African American religious studies.”

In the Light of a Blessed Tree: Illuminations of Islamic Belief, Practice, and History

$18

“In the light of A Blessed Tree presents an absolutely original, experientially textured introduction to Islamic belief, practice, and history for both the intrigued newcomer as well as for those who already possess some basic literacy in Islam. Slowly crafted over the years following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, this modest book speaks with scholarly integrity but in an everyday voice, full of real-life narratives that “illuminate” the beliefs, practices, and histories described. More, it brings the reader in touch with the psychological, social, and cultural forces that shape the way we come to the question of Islam in a wounded world, still grappling with the trauma of 9/11 and very much still in a state of war. For these and other reasons, In the Light of a Blessed Tree speaks to contemporary images and realities, even as it walks through the ancient origins of Islam.”

“What does it mean in a pastoral relationship when a careseeker evokes specific images of God or begins to speak of angels, demons, or near-death experiences? How is a caregiver to understand the faith of one who seeks help? How and to what degree is a caregiver to empathize with and interpret the careseeker’s religious language? M. Kathryn Armistead offers practical psychological and theological guidance for counselors on these questions. She refers to the counseling situation as one that involves “standing on holy ground.” Using case studies, she shows how to discover and discern the unconscious weavings of images, feelings, and ideation that combine to produce God-language and images of God, that is, “what is most holy to the self.”"

Images of Ancestors

Images of Ancestors

$37.99

A certain intimacy with one’s ancestors was essential to achieving status in the classical world. By referring to the illustrious exploits and qualities of his forebears, a man could strengthen his position in society. If his origins lacked sufficient glory, he could construct a family tree and testify to its authenticity through the judicious use of portraits and legendary allusions. In this volume, fifth in the Aarhus Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity, eleven internationally recognised scholars analyse ancestral representation in ancient Greece, Etruria and Rome. While some contributions address the artistic, social and political significance of given portraits, others address broader themes: true and false forefathers in the portraits of Hellenistic rulers, the question of whether women were ancestors in republican Rome, and how the Roman non-elite used funerary statues to acquire an ancestor.

“”Once there was a tree … and she loved a little boy.” So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk … and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return.”

 A Blue Dog Christmas

A Blue Dog Christmas

$14.95

For the Blue Dog Man, Christmas is a holiday steeped in sentiment, a season that evokes the artist’s earliest recollections of drawing, painting — and forming the first tentative thoughts about the canine who, decades later, would become his signature creation. In A Blue Dog Christmas, the painter takes readers back in time, to New Iberia, Louisiana, in the 1950s. On a quiet street in this sleepy bayou town, the twelve-year-old George Rodrigue found his calling, and discovered that the true meaning of Christmas is not to give, but to create. With original holiday-themed prints, George Rodrigue adds a new dimension to the now-legendary Blue Dog tale. Through his art, he illustrates how his childhood pets, Lady and Trixie (both terrier/spaniels like Tiffany, the inspiration for Blue Dog), played a central role in the family’s Christmas festivities. The joyous images in this volume are based on his heart-warming memories of the dogs’ holiday antics. This enlightening Christmas tale combines the appeal of almost twenty new Blue Dog images with an invigorating design that even includes an irresistible Blue Dog tree ornament. This year’s indisputable stocking stuffer, A Blue Dog Christmas will charm new readers and be cherished by longtime fans for many yuletides to come.

Barrow County, Georgia: Photographs from the Stell-Kilgore Collection (Images of America Series)

Barrow County, Georgia: Photographs from the Stell-Kilgore Collection (Images of America Series)

$21.99

The photograph files of Stell Photo Service are a treasure trove of Barrow County history. Beginning in 1946 and until his retirement in 1987, Pierson Stell, along with partner Ray Kilgore, photographed events big and small in Winder and surrounding communities. The photographs are remarkable for their quality and diversity, and stand today as one of the county’s most valuable historical resources.Like all professional photographers of their time, Stell and Kilgore did portrait work, weddings, and commercial photography; however, they took their art several steps beyond the usual. In a time when most families did not own a camera, the two men photographed children’s birthday parties, Easter egg hunts, and family reunions. Rather than spending Christmas morning with their own families, they spent that time going to the homes of families throughout the community, gathered around the Christmas tree opening gifts. Perhaps even more important from a historical standpoint was their coverage of breaking news events. Their files contain hundreds of photos of automobile accidents and train wrecks, many taken for the local newspaper and others for various insurance companies and lawyers. Stell and Kilgore also served as the forensic photographers for local law enforcement agencies, and photographed in great detail the crime scene of murders in Barrow County for decades.

Cascade Park, Pennsylvania (Images of America Series)

Cascade Park, Pennsylvania (Images of America Series)

$14.31

Since its opening in 1897, Cascade Park has welcomed thousands of visitors to its picnic grove, summer cottages, mineral springs, dance pavilion, swimming pool, baseball field, zoo, boat rides, outdoor theater, fireworks, and numerous other amusements. The park is an unusually beautiful natural setting with Big Run Falls, Cat Rocks, a gorge, rolling hills, shady walkways, and even a ginkgo tree or two. In the 1890s, when it was called a trolley park, crowds of visitors arrived by streetcar. Eventually automobiles took over, and the roller coaster was dismantled to make space for a parking lot. Today automobiles spill out of the parking lot once a year when more than 1,000 vintage cars travel to the Back to the 50′s Weekend, now in its 25th year. This and other family-oriented events continue the tradition of good times in Cascade Park.

Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (Images of America Series)

$13.45

Choctaw are the largest tribe belonging to the branch of the Muskogean family that includes the Chickasaw, Creek (Muscogee), and Seminole. According to oral history, the tribe originated from Nanih Waya, a sacred hill near present-day Noxapater, Mississippi. Nanih Waya means “productive or fruitful hill, or mountain.” During one of their migrations, they carried a tree that would lean, and every day the people would travel in the direction the tree was leaning. They traveled east and south for sometime until the tree quit leaning, and the people stopped to make their home at this location, in present-day Mississippi. The people have made difficult transitions throughout their history. In 1830, the Choctaw who were removed by the United States from their southeastern U.S. homeland to Indian Territory became known as the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Fairfax CA (Images of America Series)

Fairfax CA (Images of America Series)

$12.94

Fairfax is surrounded by oak-draped glens that have enchanted many, including its early owner and namesake, Lord Charles Snowden Fairfax. The hereditary baron, whose family once owned much of Virginia, entertained guests in grand Southern style on his lovely estate known as Bird’s Nest Glen. Later the home became Pastori’s, the beloved local landmark hotel and restaurant visited by famous guests like Irving Berlin, who once serenaded diners from a piano perched on a tree house. The 1906 earthquake chased refugees from San Francisco across the bay, and new Fairfax subdivisions appeared, along with the Fairfax Incline Railway, built to help sell hillside lots. In the same era, its meadows, hay fields, and dairy ranches provided the setting for early silent movie Westerns. Today Bird’s Nest Glen is known as the Marin Town and Country Club property, and the city boasts a thriving business district and prosperous residential areas. But it has never lost its rustic charm and hospitality.

Historic Mill Creek Park, Ohio (Images of America Series)

$21.99

Founded in 1891 as Ohio’s first park district, Mill Creek Park encompasses a unique wealth of natural and designed features that have been the backdrop for generations of family memories, spanning three centuries. A remarkable visionary, park founder Volney Rogers argued that the land itself could improve the lives of Youngstown’s residents. Through fresh air for mill-weary lungs and tree laced horizons for workroom-bound spirits, he knew a park would make the community a better place for families. And he succeeded magnificently. Rogers and the nationally known landscape architects that he hired created breathtaking vistas of Lanterman’s Falls and scenic gorges and designed trails, drives, and three pleasure lakes. Other park features include nature preserves, display gardens, recreational fields, a Donald Ross-designed golf course, and a legacy of historic structures. Mill Creek Park indeed has earned its legendary claim as the most beautiful urban park in America.

Irondequoit, New York (Images of America Series)

$21.99

Irondequoit portrays the rich past of a Lake Ontario town with a name that comes from the Iroquois word meaning where land and waters meet.” Originally part of the Phelps Gorham purchase of 1788, Irondequoit was established in 1839. The area, once marred by swamps and marshes, eventually became “the Garden Spot of Western New York,” known far and wide for its peaches, melons, and vegetables. Later the town developed as a resort area, with attractions like Sea Breeze Amusement Park, Glen Haven Park, the Newport House, and White City, a 300-family tent colony. Irondequoit’s tree-lined streets, excellent schools, and access to prime recreational areas, including Sea Breeze, Durand-Eastman Park, and Irondequoit Bay Park, continue to draw people who make it the thriving community it is today.”

Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering: A Mark-Making Workbook for Crafters, Cardmakers, and Journal Artists

Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering: A Mark-Making Workbook for Crafters, Cardmakers, and Journal Artists

$17.99

Calligraphy, the art of elegant, beautiful lettering, has increased in popularity over the last several years. From brides who want to address their wedding invitations to do-it-yourselfers who want to prepare certificates or make a family tree, and even for art journalers and scrapbookers who like creative text in their works, calligraphy books and classes are hot. This new-in-paperback book will spark the interest of the calligraphy novice by introducing a new approach to lettering, one that combines a lively combination of traditional lettering styles, fun and scripty modern styles, and artsy street-style lettering, along with project ideas that incorporate creative lettering. The book demonstrates the uses of traditional and cutting edge lettering tools, from classic calligraphy pens to bling-producing metallic foils and glue pens. It introduces a wide array of lettering styles with complete alphabets sample artworks that show an application. Fully stepped-out illustrations break down each letterform, taking the reader through each stroke and a large collection of gallery images provides further inspiration for how to use creative lettering in artwork. Lisa Engelbrecht (Long Beach, CA) is a lettering artist and was an instructor of calligraphy at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, where she instituted a Certificate in Calligraphy. She teaches workshops and classes around the country specializing in lettering on fabric and alternative surfaces, experimental lettering and the creative process.
