“Anthony Pinn’s engrossing survey highlights the rich diversity of black religious life in America, revealing manifestations of an ever-changing black religious quest in four non-Christian indigenous movements.>Based on extensive interviews, travel, and research — embellished with ample photos, bibliographies, and case studies — Pinn provides an insider look at Voodoo, Orisha devotion, Santeria, the Nation of Islam, and Black Humanism in the U.S. Focusing less on institutional and doctrinal history and more on the varied popular religious practices and sites, his volume highlights the influence of Caribbean religions in the U.S., practices of divination and healing, the surge of black Muslim religion, the emergence of black humanism, religious influences on the ethical practices of black women, and the import of previously overlooked religious settings (e.g., church women’s clubs, local politics, Pentecostal religion, private religious practices).>The emergent picture, more subtle, varied, and vibrant than traditional black Christian marks a new era in African American religious studies.”

The Schmitt family must be on the top of any list to play acoustic hot jazz from the Django Reinhardt camp in terms of sheer numbers. Leader/composer Dorado Schmitt, Samson Schmitt, Amati Schmitt, and Bronson Schmitt are but four of the six guitarists fronting this true band of Gypsies, with a rhythm section and accordion specialist Marcel Loeffler. While a third of their repertoire stems from Reinhardt’s Hot Club of France or jazz standards, the rest are originals by Dorado Schmitt or other members of this tasteful, pleasing ensemble. When you listen to the recording, it seems as though the collective whole is broken down into smaller combos, as if this large family is not so much out to overwhelm. Also, everything here is fairly concise within a shortened format, the very slow tunes like an emotionally dripping “Just a Gigolo” and Dorado Schmitt’s sweet romantic ballad “Un Si Beau Jour” being the exceptions, averaging six minutes. Where “Miro Django” in its steady swing gets the guitarists fired up to play fleet solos, composer Hono Winterstein (one of the six guitarists, as is Brady Winterstein) asks that everyone play very fast on the Parisian jaunt “Blue Citron.” Standards like the quick bopper and chunky melody of “Topsy,” Reinhardt’s showstopping “Minor Swing,” and the languid ballad “Nuages” are played fairly typically, but “My Blue Heaven” is updated with clever dead stops and start-ups. “For Grappelli” features the breezy accordion of Loeffler, who is the glue holding these speed demons together, but he joins in with the sprinters during “Fete de la Musique,” the hottest of swingers. At the group’s most settled, the under two-minute “J’Attendrai” shows the band can be less hyper, more sensibly parceled, and displaying a group aesthetic. “SamSong” has the Schmitt family in their most integrated stance, both in rhythm and with an edited approach, while the line to “Django’s Tiger” is stretched out a bit. It seems there are many more bands of this type on the scene, not to suggest a trend as much as that people really like this kind of coalesced vintage jazz. It will be interesting to see what Dorado Schmitt and his siblings do the next time out, but for now, they’ve reached a peak of excellence within this well-defined genre. ~ Michael G. Annabel Alpers isn’t quite so solo on My Electric Family as she was on earlier Bachelorette releases, and it shows. The delicacy and intimacy of The End of Things and Isolation Loops reflected the fact that she made those albums with very little outside help. Here, Alpers recruits a full backing band, as well as the Royal New Zealand Air Force Brass Band, to broaden the horizons of her electro-folk-pop. The results are much livelier and more dynamic than anything she’s done before. “Mindwarp” is downright buoyant, switching from driving, disco-tinged verses to trippy breakdowns with charismatic ease, but psychedelic dance-pop is actually one the album’s more predictable musical hybrids. Alpers has always favored an unusual mix of sounds and concepts in Bachelorette’s music, but everything is given room to breathe and blossom on My Electric Family: “Instructions for Insomniacs,” for example, begins with an acoustic ramble that unfolds into a psych-pop reverie complete with dense vocal harmonies and flute-like synths. As involving as Alpers’ melodies and arrangements are, it’s the tension between the organic and mechanical aspects of her music that makes My Electric Family’s best moments so intriguing. Alpers sings with almost robotic precision, but her raspy alto is quite human — a contrast she uses to its fullest on “Dream Sequence,” where she sings of “neural pathways” over bouncy, brassy indie pop. Her sci-fi fables and morality tales, filled with characters somewhere in between humanity and technology, are standouts. The sleepy “Mercurial Man” revolves around a lover who’s literally in Alpers’ blood, while “Her Rotating Head” is a fascinating (and deceptively demure) meditation on femininity focused on a passive, plastic dream girl who is “eternally yours/to reject and explore.” Though the album returns to Alpers’ more insular style as it comes to a close, My Electric Family is still a significant step forward for this Bachelorette who is no longer quite so alone. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Lee Prebble – Lap Steel Guitar; Royal New Zealand Air Force Brass Band – Brass; Andrew Bain – Guitar (Bass); Annabel Alpers – Vocals; Craig Terris – Drums; Dino Karlis – Drums; Tom Watson – Guitar (Electric), Guitar

There are some myopic individuals in the jazz world who dislike any music that isn’t straight-ahead acoustic jazz; they dislike rock, funk, and hip-hop as much as they dislike country. But there are also skillful musicians who can play jazz quite well but also have strong non-jazz credentials, and pianist/keyboardist/composer Mike Garson is one of them. Garson is best known in the rock world for his long association with David Bowie — an association that is highly appropriate given Bowie’s chameleonic nature and Garson’s impressive ability to adapt to a variety of musical settings. Conversations with My Family, which is one of Garson’s jazz-oriented projects, finds the veteran pianist working with arranger Kuno Schmid as well as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, violinist Chris Howes, guitarist Andreas Öberg, flutist Lori Bell, and bassist Bob Magnusson. Schmid doesn’t provide all of the arrangements, but he provides a lot of them — and Schmid’s thoughtful, classical-influenced arrangements sometimes suggest Gil Evans, while Garson’s acoustic pianism draws on the influence of another Evans: pianist Bill Evans. Albums that have as much arranging as Conversations with My Family can — depending on who the arrangers are — bury the main soloist and deprive him/her of solo space. But neither Schmid’s arrangements nor Garson’s arrangements allow Garson’s piano to become buried or obscured; Garson still has plenty of room to stretch out — and Roditi (one of the finest jazz trumpeters to come out of Brazil) gets in a few noteworthy solos as well. Working with Schmid is definitely advantageous for Garson on this worthwhile post-bop disc.~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Andreas Öberg – Guitar; Bob Magnusson – Bass; Christian Howes – Violin; Claudio Roditi – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Dave Carpenter – Bass; Gary Novak – Drums; Lori Bell – Flute; Mike Garson – Piano; Peter Erskine – Drums

“”I remember a time I tried to create fellowship with my wife and kids. We all went camping. Sounds like something people do to create good memories and establish family ties, right? Well, it was a disaster Pure tension It seemed no one could do anything right. Being a city boy I grew up behind a television. My favorite shows were all the education I needed. Camping would be piece of cake We would set up our tent in wild surroundings. Then we would go fishing, catch the BIG ONE, and roast it over an open fire. For dessert there would be s’mores and roasted marshmallows. Then we would joyfully sing campfire songs. After this I would put the kids to bed in their sleeping bags and they would instantly go to sleep. My wife and I would stay up late next to the fire, looking at the stars and making love. Upon our arrival, I found that reality was a far cry from the movies.” Sit back and relax as Jonathan and Maranatha take you on a fun, yet challenging journey through the ins and outs of raising kids. Learn the secrets of how these ordinary parents achieved extraordinary results at winning the hearts of their children.
