What website can I go on to find out my Family History for free?

I really want to find out my family history but every website I go on wants money! Help????

You will need to get back to the 19th century from family knowledge before the free sites will be much use to you.

So talk to all your relatives, ask to see old photographs, records of birth, baptism, death and marriage, family Bibles, funeral service sheets, etc, and make copies. Find out where all your deceased relatives are buried, visit the graves, transcribe the information on the gravestones and take photographs. If you don’t know where people are buried or are unable to visit the graves, you may find them on www.findagrave.com

Too many of us family historians regret not questioning the oldies closely before they popped their clogs, so get all the names, dates and places you can and then check these against the official records. Then work back one generation at a time, using birth/baptism, death/burial and marriage records, and the census.

The national indexes of birth, marriage and death up to the 1930s can be searched at http://freebmd.org.uk Civil registration was introduced in England and Wales on 1st July 1837, although registration of births was not compulsory until 1875 and it is estimated that up to 50% of births may not have been registered in the early years. Search more recent indexes on microfiche at your County Record Office, central library, LDS Family History Centre, or at Ancestry.co.uk which you may be able to use for free at the library. Some local registration offices are putting their indexes online at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/

When you have found the right entry in the index, the birth, marriage or death certificate costs £9.25 when ordered online from the General Register Office and providing them with the full reference from the index:- http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Familyhistoryandresearch/Birthmarriageanddeathcertificates/DG_175628

The census returns for England and Wales from 1841 to 1911 are held at the National Archives at Kew, and the census images and transcriptions can be accessed via the links on their website:- http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/default.htm?WT.hp=Census Only the 1881 census is available free online, all the others are on paid sites although it is free to search the indexes. If your local library has installed Ancestry Library Edition on their computers, you may be able to search the census there for free. Volunteers are transcribing the other censuses to make them freely available and this site has completed some counties for some years:- www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

On the free LDS sites you can search the 1881 census, and the International Genealogical Index (IGI) which is a large collection of extracts from parish registers. Many more records can be searched on microfilm or fiche at your local LDS Family History Centre – find out where the nearest one is from their website (and you don’t have to become a Mormon, lol, just be respectful – they won’t even try to convert you!). You can also download their family history program Personal Ancestral File (PAF) for free. http://www.familysearch.org

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

Before 1837, the only records of the main life events of our Ancestors will be found in the parish registers of baptism, marriage and burial. Churches still keep these registers but usually deposit the old ones for safekeeping with the County Record Office where they can be searched on microfilm/fiche. These two free sites are in process of putting parish registers online:- http://onlineparishclerks.org.uk/ and www.freereg.org.uk

If you want an accurate Family Tree you will not rely on online Family Trees, many of which appear to have been submitted by ‘name-collectors’ who do not care how tenuous the links are as long as they end up with a family tree that goes back to Adam and Eve. However, it is worth looking for clues in the trees on Ancestry.com and the WorldConnect project at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ but verify anything you find online by consulting the original records before incorporating the data into Your Family Tree.

These are directories of genealogical resources with links to websites, some of which will be free:-

http://www.genuki.org.uk/

http://www.cyndislist.com/

www.worldgenweb.com
Genuki has a page for each county where you can locate the County Record Office where the parish records will be held, and other resources for that county.

History: A Very Short Introduction

History: A Very Short Introduction

$11.95

“There are many stories we can tell about the past, and we are not, perhaps, as free as we might imagine in our choice of which stories to tell, or where those stories end. John Arnold’s addition to Oxford’s popular Very Short Introductions series is a stimulating essay about how people study and understand history. The book begins by inviting us to think about various questions provoked by our investigation of history, and then explores the ways in which these questions have been answered in the past. Such key concepts as causation, interpretation, and periodization are introduced by way of concrete examples of how historians work, thus giving the reader a sense of the excitement implicit in discovering the past–and ourselves.> The aim throughout History: A Very Short Introduction is to discuss theories of history in a general, pithy, and accessible manner, rather than delve into specific periods. This is a book that will appeal to all students and general readers with an interest in history or historiography.”

“Using letters and other family documents, Frazier reconstructs two hundred years of middle-class life, visiting small towns his ancestors lived in, reading books they read, and discovering the larger forces of history that affected them. He observes some of them during the British raid on Danbury, Connecticut, in the Revolutionary War; he follows others west as they pioneer in the wilderness of Ohio and Indiana; he visits the battlefields where they fought the Civil War. Frazier interviews old-timers, uncles, aunts, cousins, maids, and a beer-store owner who knew his dad. He pursues the family saga in aspect from trivial to grand, hoping for “a meaning that would defeat death.” “Family “is a poetic epic of facts, a chronicle of Protestant culture’s rise and fall, a memorial, and a revised view of American history as romantic as it is cold-eyed.>”

$22.99

“Joseph P. Free’s Archaeology and Bible History, first published in 1950, served well an entire generation of pastors, Sunday school teachers, laypersons, and college students by summarizing the history of the Bible and shedding light on biblical events through archaeological discoveries. The author demonstrated how such data helps us understand the Bible and confirm its historical accuracy. At times he also dealt with issues of biblical interpretation and criticism, always from a historically orthodox position. When the book was withdrawn from circulation in 1976 after the fourteenth printing, many hoped for the day when it would be revised and updated. That task has now been undertaken by one of Dr. Free’s former students and a biblical archaeologist in his own right, Dr. Howard Vos. He has brought the archaeological and historical material up to date and has modified earlier archaeological interpretations where necessary. The bibliography has been almost totally replaced.”

Healing Your Family History: 5 Steps To Break Free Of Destructive Patterns

Healing Your Family History: 5 Steps To Break Free Of Destructive Patterns

$10.49

This fascinating book by Rebecca Linder Hintze powerfully and effectively communicates a key, and sometimes overlooked, piece of the puzzle relating to family dynamics. For example, have you ever wondered why some families reach a ceiling on their earning potential, struggle to have happy marriages, or have such difficult interactions with their siblings and parents? Perhaps your family has a history of sabotaging careers or thwarting their love relationships? Healing Your Family History explains that most of our individual issues originate from family blocks. As you read this book, you’ll come to understand how family belief systems store inside you and prevent individual growth by locking you into thought processes that hold you back. All families have these nonverbal belief systems, and unless you understand and heal your inherent blocks, it may be difficult to love others, move forward, and get what you want in life. Most people have a family . . . and we all have a reason to heal our related challenges after all, tribal issues sit at the core of world turmoil. Those who are truly ready to heal their family dysfunction will benefit immensely from this book!

Breaking Free: A Recovery Handbook for Facing Codependence”

$18.99

“In her pioneering “Facing Codependence, ” Pia Mellody traced the origins of codependence back to childhood and a wide range of emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and sexual abuses. Now in this innovative new workbook, she presents a step-by-step journal-keeping method for moving toward recovery from codependence. Based on such concepts as the “precious child” and the five core symptoms of codependence, along with the Twelve-Step process of recovery used by Codependents Anonymous, “Breaking Free” provides strategies and insights for attacking the fundamental problem in codependence–the lack of dependence on self. > In a three-part approach to recovery, Mellody first shows recovering codependents how to move beyond denial of their childhood history of abuse. She then offers techniques to identify concrete ways in which the symptoms of codependence operate in their lives. Finally, Mellody guides users through the process of identifying and recording specific instances of improvement in their lives as an aid to greater self-awareness and further recovery.”

“A large portion of our population are in the golden years of their life and have lived through unprecedented changes during their life span that has never been recorded. They have an amazing history locked in their minds that most family members are unaware of. Every year families lose their parents before they have gleaned valuable histories of family trees, events, memories and historical values that can never be recovered. Most family members are unaware of the amazing history of these great saints. Here is a resource that captures a lifetime of detail that can be passed down for generations to come. > How we communicate life’s lessons to our children, may determine the course set for our descendants’ own lives. Little may remain to remind anyone of an ordinary life-a cold, hard tombstone, a few dog-eared photos, perhaps some possessions, unless written down. The thoughts and beliefs that once defined an individual, disappear with his or her last breath. > “To My Family: My Reflections, Values, Experiences and Family History” is a practical, user-friendly tool that will allow families to capture the rich legacy of their family members for the conveyance of wisdom, knowledge, family history, understanding and the experience of beloved family members before it is too late.”

“David Grene, one of the best known translators of the Greek classics, splendidly captures the peculiar quality of Herodotus, the father of history. >Here is the historian, investigating and judging what he has seen, heard, and read, and seeking out the true causes and consequences of the great deeds of the past. In his “History,” the war between the Greeks and Persians, the origins of their enmity, and all the more general features of the civilizations of the world of his day are seen as a unity and expressed as the vision of one man who as a child lived through the last of the great acts in this universal drama. >In Grene’s remarkable translation and commentary, we see the historian as a storyteller, combining through his own narration the skeletal “historical” facts and the imaginative reality toward which his story reaches. Herodotus emerges in all his charm and complexity as a writer and the first historian in the Western tradition, perhaps unique in the way he has seen the interrelation of fact and fantasy. >”Reading Herodotus in English has never been so much fun. . . . Herodotus crowds his fresco-like pages with all shades of humanity. Whether Herodotus’s view is ‘tragic, ‘ mythical, or merely common sense, it provided him with a moral salt with which the diversity of mankind could be savored. And savor it we do in David Grene’s translation.”–Thomas D’Evelyn, “Christian Science Monitor” >”Grene’s work is a monument to what translation intends, and to what it is hungry to accomplish. . . . Herodotus gives more sheer pleasure than almost any other writer.”–Peter Levi, “New York Times Book Review >”"

“SCM’s Reclaiming Liberation Theology series seeks to establish a constructive dialogue between the first and the new generation of liberation theologians. Enrique Dussel is one of the world’s foremost Marxist philosophers whose work continues to have a profound impact on liberation theology. In Politics of Liberation Dussel presents an alternative reading of the history of the political world and the ideas that have inspired their political philosophy. He argues that our current view of the world needs to break free from being too focused on the thought world of Ancient Greece and on Europe. In this work he offers a reading of the political history of the world as an against-story, a story of an anti-traditional tradition.”

Dred Scott's Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom in America

Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom in America

$25.99

“>Judge Andrew Napolitano lays bare the twisted legal history of racism in America. >”All men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights” wedded the American soul to the concept that freedom comes from our humanity, not from the government. But American governments legally suspended the free will of blacks for 150 years, and then denied blacks equal protection of the law for another 150 years. How did this happen in America, how were the Constitution and laws of the land twisted so as to institutionalize racism, and how did it or will it end? In a refreshingly candid book, “Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom In America,” Judge Andrew P. Napolitano takes a no-holds-barred look at the role of the government in the denial of freedoms based on race. >Endorsements >”The best history of the law and race I’ve ever read. . . Judge Napolitano has written a challenge to anyone who thinks they understand the roots of America’s tangled race relations.” — Juan Williams, National Public Radio >”The Attorney General ignited a firestorm by suggesting that ours was a nation of ‘cowards’ when it comes to conversations about race. Judge Andrew Napolitano is no coward. His brave and incisive book takes the calamitous, contemptuous Dred Scott decision, which held slaves to be “non-persons,” as its starting point. In this sharply written narrative, the Judge shows us how race remains the driving force in almost every aspect of American life, from education to law enforcement. Dred Scott, the person, would have appreciated this graphic and honest appraisal.” — Geraldo Rivera, Fox News Channel >”Judge Napolitano . . . has written a riveting guide to the tumultuous history of our civil rights journey, coming to a post-racial society.” — Nat Hentoff, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, senior fellow at the Cato Institute >”Dred Scott’s Revenge makes it impossible for the self-anointed ‘experts’ on race relations to ever accuse the country of being too afraid to have a national discussion on race. Judge Napolitano lays out 150 years of our national experience . . . and places the blame for much of what’s wrong squarely at the feet of those responsible: the federal government and politicians whose plans, policies, and programs trashed the Constitution. Compelling and timely reading written for the layman, not lawyers ” — Glenn Beck, Nationally syndicated radio talk show host; Host, The Glenn Beck Program, Fox News Channel >”It is said President Obama gave the definitive speech on race; well, Judge Andrew Napolitano has written the definitive book. He] has broken new ground as he examines the precious link between the words men write about freedom and the true freedom of all men.” — Gov. Michael Steele, Chair, Republican National Committee”

“From a unique insider’s perspective — including interviews with more than seven-hundred family members — James D. Chancellor charts The Family’s course since its emergence as the most controversial group to grow out of the Jesus People Movement in the 1960s.>Chancellor, who had extraordinary access to rare Family records, includes the experiences of members who have remained loyal to the community and to the founding vision of their prophet, David Brandt Berg. In the first book of its kind — comprising often painful personal histories and firsthand accounts — Chancellor focuses on the motivation and process of becoming a Child of God, the core beliefs of the community, the mission of the disciples, their shifting sexual mores, and the cost of membership in terms of internal discipline and external persecution.>Intense confrontation with the legal, religious, political, and educational establishment marked the movement’s activities from the beginning. The young disciples heeded the call of their prophet to flee a soon-to-be-destroyed North America. Dispersed throughout Europe, Latin America, Africa, and East Asia, they virtually disappeared from the American landscape. In the late 1980s, The Family had gone through extreme theological and lifestyle changes, including a radical reordering of their sexual ethos. The Children of God started to come home. Now a worldwide counterculture of some twelve thousand members, the movement’s colorful history reveals a profoundly religious group that has tested the limits of human experience.”

Excerpt: The Ancient High HouseThe Ancient High House is an Elizabethan town house in Stafford . It is the largest timber framed town house in England . The house was constructed in 1594 by the Dorrington family, from local oak . In 1642 Charles I stayed in the ancient high house, at the start of the English Civil War . It was further used as a prison for Royalists during the civil war.The Sneyd family were here through the 17th century, and the structure was seriously weakened by renovations to the ground floor in the 19th century. The Ancient High House is now largely a historic house museum with a collection of period room furnishings and displays, including the English Civil War , Edwardian and Victorian eras. A gallery features changing exhibits of art, photography and history. The museum is operated by the Stafford Borough Council. The Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum is housed in the attic floor, and features uniforms and artifacts of the Staffordshire Yeomanry .The bottom floor is currently flanked by a Savers discount store and Chinese natural remedy shop. It was once also home to a Cancer Research charity until its closure in June 2006. The house stands out from the surrounding 20th century structures, including its immediate neighbour – McDonalds .Websites (URLs online) Coordinates :

The house is also the home of the Ulster County Historical Society and is currently open to the public as a museum .Bevier House is believed to have been constructed around 1680 by Andries Pieterse Van Leuvan. The original part of the house, currently the kitchen, was designed in the Dutch style and was probably a one-room, one-story structure. In 1715 the house was bought by Louis Bevier, son of the New Paltz patentee, who expanded the structure and operated it as part of a large farm. The house was donated to the Historical Society in 1938 after being used by seven generations of the Bevier Family between 1715 and 1939, during which it was expanded to the two-story building currently standing. The museum displays a series of additions and renovations that explain its history and provide context for the artifacts donated by the family and numerous others. The museum’s collection includes farm implements , home furnishings and decor, and an array of American Civil War memorabilia relating directly to Ulster County . It also includes the earliest-known land

Excerpt: Saamoothirippd or Saamoothiri (Malayalam: ), anglicised Zamorin or Samorin, is the title used by the Eradi (Nair) rulers of the erstwhile state of Kozhikode (anglicised Calicut) (Nediyirippu Swarpam), located in the present day state of Kerala, India. They ruled between the 14th and 18th century AD and were the most powerful kings of kerala during the middle age. Mnavikraman Raja, the Saamoothiri of Kozhikode is famous for being the ruler who received the Portuguese trader and navigator Vasco da Gama on May 18, 1498. The Saamoothiri originally were Eradis (rulers of Eranad)as per legend two Eradi (a higher subdivision of Nairs) brothers known as Manikkan and Vikraman establish this ruling family. Eranad was a small fiefdom which was one of the four states (Eranad, Kolathunadu, Perumpadapu and Venad) that made up the Chera Empire. It is said that in the 14th century, the Saamoothiris killed Porlathiri the ruler of Polanad by treachery, and annexed that state. They moved their capital to present day Kozhikode (which was a part of Polanad) and named it Thrivikramapuram. All of this may have been precipitated by the great flood of the Periyar river in about 1341AD. This flood resulted in the silting of the harbour of Kodungallur (anglicised as Cranganore), a town known to be frequented by Arab and Roman and Chinese traders (Refer Indian Ancient Maritime History). The silting led to the rise in prosperity of other ports like Kochi (also known as Cochin), and Kozhikode. The Zamorin assumed the title of Samudrthiri (meaning “one who has the sea for his border”) and continued to rule from Kozhikode. The title Samudrthiri was shortened to Smoothiri over time in common usage. The present Saamoothiri is Kunhikuttan Raja of Thriukunna Kovilakam. After … More:

Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Deaths References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Repnin Sejm (Polish : Sejm Repninowski ) was a Sejm (session of the Polish parliament ) that took place between 1767 and 1768 in Warsaw , Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth . This session followed the Sejms of 1764 to 1766, where the newly elected king of Poland, Stanislaw II Poniatowski , attempted with some successes to push through reforms to strengthen the government of the Commonwealth. These reforms were viewed as dangerous by Poland’s neighbors, who preferred a weak Commonwealth and did not want to see it threaten their own political and military aspirations.History The Russian Empire ‘s Minister to Warsaw, ambassador and Prince Nicholas Repnin (for whom the Sejm was named) received orders from Russian Empress Catherine the Great to bribe and coerce the Sejm deputies in order to push legislation favourable to Russia, in effect “a carefully drafted plan for destroying the republic” . At that time Poland had a population of about 11,5 millions, out of which about 1 million were religious dissidents . In his preparations Repnin fostered unrest among the religious minorities (Protestants (mostly in Royal Prussia and Greater Poland ) and Eastern Orthodox (mostly in Grand Duchy of Lithuania )), who wanted to have equal rights with the Roman Catholics .Repnin was well aware that a Catholic nobility dominated Sejm would be strongly opposed to such demands. He also calculated that such a demand itself would make the szlachta suspicious of all reform, including the recent reforms of king Stanisaw August Poniatowski and his supporters from the magnate Czartoryski family, were already rather unpopular, as being innovators under foreign influence. Repnin calculations were
